Preschool teacher wins ‘shop local’ competition in Victoria

A preschool teacher working two jobs has won a national competition with a $1,000 Downtown Victoria Gift Card as a prize.

Backed by Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA), the Win Your Dream Christmas competition from Miconex gave people the chance to win a $1,000 Downtown Gift Card for their chosen downtown.

Emily, 55, from Tsawwassen, is excited to spend her Downtown Victoria Gift Card in the capital, saying:

“The reason I entered the contest was because I love Christmas shopping, even if it’s just window shopping. I’m a full-time preschool teacher, and I also work at the local mall to help out with expenses. The cost of everything has gone up and being able to go out for the day in Victoria with my Gift Card, without worrying about whether I can afford it, will be so nice.

“A $1,000 Downtown Victoria Gift Card is a significant amount. I’ll be able to treat my mom to some wool from the wool shop, and my siblings and children to something nice, as well. I can’t wait to check out the jewellery store or get my hair done. I used to live near Victoria, and still take the ferry over often to visit friends. The quaint and charming pubs and vintage stores give Victoria its warm and enjoyable atmosphere.

“I like to shop local and think the Downtown Victoria Gift Card is a great idea. Shopping online is sterile and you don’t know where that money is going. When you shop local, you’re shopping with passionate owners and artisans, and you know you’re contributing to the welfare of the community. Local businesses play a large part in creating the ambience of a downtown area like Victoria.

“I’m so surprised to have won the competition, it’s the biggest and best prize I’ve ever won and I’m really excited to spend my Downtown Victoria Gift Card.”

Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA) launched the Downtown Victoria Gift Card in November 2023 as a component of their continuous marketing of downtown.

Jeff Bray, CEO of the DVBA said:

“Our goal when introducing the Gift Card was to make it easy for customers to shop, dine, and experience all that downtown Victoria has to offer. We’re thrilled to see a passionate shop local advocate like Emily win the $1,000 Downtown Victoria Gift Card, and hope Emily has a wonderful time spending her Gift Card with our downtown businesses.”

The technology for the Downtown Victoria Gift Card is provided by fintech Miconex in association with international payments technology solutions provider EML Payments.  Miconex operates its Downtown Gift Card concept right across Canada and the USA.
