Merchant FAQs

We have accumulated the most common questions about Downtown Gift Cards that we receive from merchants and have provided the answers below

How do I accept Downtown Gift Cards?
Taking payments with a Downtown Gift Card is as simple as taking any other card payment. Process as a Visa Card (credit) transaction
How do I register to accept Downtown Gift Cards?
In order to accept the Gift Card, you will need to process a transaction through your card terminal with a card with no funds so that the transaction will decline. This enables us to pick up your Merchant ID and add it to a list of approved Merchant IDs. You do not need to install any software or additional hardware to accept the Gift Card and there are no funds attached to the card number you use to carry out the transaction. When processing the transaction you may be asked to enter an address, please use your business address. If you are asked for a name please use ‘Gift Card’. Here is the form to complete: https://form.jotform.com/Miconex/Merchant-Onboarding-Canada
How do I accept Downtown Gift Cards with a swipe facility?
If you have a card machine with a swipe facility, swipe the customer’s Downtown Gift Card through the machine and the sales value will be deducted from the card balance.
How do I accept Town & City Gift Cards without a swipe facility?
Without a swipe facility, the Downtown Gift Card payment can be completed by entering the card number, expiry and CVV on your terminal to complete the sale, as you would when taking a payment over the phone. If a transaction asks for a signature please press the ‘Yes’ option. If ‘No’ is pressed the transaction will not register on our system.
Are there any additional costs to accept Downtown Gift Cards?
There are no fees for you to register with the program. There is a maximum cost of 5% for processing a Gift Card, inclusive of the fees that you already pay your Payment Services Provider. This fee for accepting the card will differ from merchant to merchant depending on your Payment Service Provider agreement. For example, If a merchant has agreed a fixed rate for all card payments regardless of payment type then they will pay this fixed rate for accepting the Gift Card. If the customer uses the Gift Card as part payment for a product or service it will be only the value of the Gift Card element of the transaction that will attract the enhanced fee of maximum 5%. As the payment is a Visa transaction, you’ll receive the funds from your acquirer for the transaction as per your Merchant Acquirer Agreement. This is your agreement with the company that provides your card terminal.
The terminal has asked for a pin code, where do I find this?
The pin code will be the last 4 digits of the long card number which you can input into the terminal to continue the payment process.
I have a new terminal? Do I need to do anything?
If it’s only the terminal that has changed and the Merchant ID has remained the same then no action is required. If you are unsure if your Merchant ID has changed then please re-register your terminal. If the Merchant ID has changed we’ll need to re-register your terminal.
How do I accept digital e-card Downtown Gift Cards?
E-card versions of Downtown Gift Cards use Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay to allow customer to pay. 1. Tender the transaction as a debit/credit card. 2. Have customers hold their Device with Apple Pay/Samsung Pay/Google Pay next to the reader. 3. The transaction will process as a normal payment.
How do I or the customer check how much is on the card?
The instructions on how to check the balance on the Gift Card are written on the reverse of the card. Customers can call the balance enquiry number on the reverse of their card, or check online at www.getmybalance.com to check their balance.
What do I do if there is not enough money on the Gift Card to cover the transaction?
If the value of the purchase exceeds the balance on the Gift card the card will decline. Split payments are possible between Gift Cards and another form of payment. Follow your own store policy regarding split tender transactions: Verify the available balance on the card Swipe & run the card for the exact available balance on the card Obtain another form of payment for the remainder of the sale
